Maca root for your hormones (3)

Balanced hormones are essential for overall health and well-being. Hormones are powerful chemical messengers, and they have the ability to control your mood, metabolism, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, growth and stress levels.  However, there are many factors that can disrupt your hormone levels. Such as a bad diet, a build up of toxins/chemicals, synthetic steroid hormones and lack of sleep. To lessen the damaging effects of these factors certain foods and herbs can be consumed. Such as the maca root – an adaptogen herb that helps your glands, by providing the nutrients they need.

Balanced hormones: Maca Root

Maca root, also known as Lepidium Meyenii. Is a root vegetable originating from Peru, specifically the Andes Mountains. In ancient times, maca was eaten by the Incas warriors before going into battle to boost their energy levels. Now brought over to the Western World, maca is considered to be one of the many  “modern day superfoods.”

There are 4 different types of Maca root; white, red, black and purple. Each plant has different properties, so the best maca powder to get is a mixture of all 4. The finest maca is grown in its original habitat. As the harsh elevated terrain, gives the maca plant it’s strengthening properties in a pesticide free environment. Traditionally, the powder is prepared by drying the root in temperatures below 55oC and then milled by hand.

You can consume maca by capsule tablets or as a powder. The maca powder can be added to foods such as porridge and smoothies. Maca has a malty flavour, with a hint of butterscotch and a  floury texture. So, tablet form might be best for those that would not enjoy the taste. There are no harmful side effects to taking maca. However, read the instructions carefully and take accordingly.

The master glands

The hypothalamus and pituitary glands regulate all hormonal production throughout the body. The hypothalamus is a gland found under the thalamus area within the brain. And the pituitary gland is about the size of a pea found at the base of the brain. The hypothalamus sends hormones to the pituitary gland. Which in turn will send hormones to other glands, as an notification to produce their own hormones. For all your glands to be working properly, it is essential that the hypothalamus and pituitary glands are receiving the nutrients they need.

Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands are two glands that are placed on top of the kidneys. They are formed of two sections; the outer part is the adrenal cortex and the inner part is the adrenal medulla. The adrenal medulla produces hormones that are necessary for the fight or flight response. In other words, when the body is under stress.
When the adrenal glands are not releasing the correct amount of hormones it can cause individuals to feel extremely tired and faint. No matter how much sleep and rest they have. Stimulants such as caffeine in coffee, tea and energy drinks are life-savers. However, this is a short term cover up and typically leaves sufferers feeling dehydrated and tired a few hours later.
Maca provides your adrenal glands with the right nutrients they need to work properly, making sure you have balanced hormones. Therefore, the maca root will not give you the highs and lows you receive from those stimulants.

Sex glands

The female sex glands are the ovaries. They are two almond sized sex glands that contain up to a million immature eggs at birth. Each egg is surrounded by a group of cells called a follicle. The follicle secretes the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, both essential for the menstrual cycle.

As you can see from this table oestrogen and progesterone work together to create balance. Unbalanced sex hormones can cause a loss of libido, disrupted menstrual cycle, hot flushes, trouble conceiving and many more side effects. Maca is also known as natures viagra, not just for women but for men too. Again, this is because Maca provides the nutrients the glands need to create balanced hormones.

Other factors

For those that are currently taking the contraceptive pill. There will be an increase of the steroid hormones oestrogen and progesterone. If looking for a natural and non sex hormone disruptive form of contraception, I recommend Lady Comp.
